RE: Verwendung von んです und と おもうんですが
P = Peter, N = Nami
N: んだ is informal, んですis formal
P: Right, they use it for giving or asking for explanations. First of all, let’s look at the sentence of the dialogue. In the dialogue, Mr Shimoya said “頭が痛いんだ” – “I have a headache”. He used んだbecause Erica was worrying about him and he was trying to explain why he didn’t look well. If he’d simply said “頭が痛い”, it sounds like he’s just stating the fact and make come off a little abrupt, but adding んだto the sentence..it makes it clear that the speaker is trying to explain something or give a point. Nami-sensei, can we hear a couple more examples?
N: Okay. “I have a girlfriend” is “僕は彼女がいる”.
P: Now this sentence is simply stating that you have a girlfriend.
N: but if you use んだ and say “僕は彼女がいるんだ”, it sounds like you are trying to explain or imply something by saying that you have a girlfriend.
P: So for example, the fact that you have a girlfriend and not going to help your friend who wants to go on a doubledate with someone else. Saying “come on, just come along with me, you know, I just need a wingman, someone to go with me” and you just don’t want to get in trouble, it’s like “彼女がいるんだ”, like, “Im not going because I have a girlfriend!”
N: next, let’s check the formation of the sentence structure.
P: it’s pretty simple. All you have to do it attach んだor んですto an informal sentence.

For なadjectives and nouns, you need to insert なbefore なだor んです, like “貴方が好きなんです”, so would you go out with me? So remember, this んですis really important grammar to know if you want to sound natural in Japanese, and this ん is actually a shortening of の, so again, what this の is doing, is emphasizing.
